Not As Advertised - This is NOT an Apple Manufactured Unit
|
| Review Date: November 24, 2009 |
| Reviewer: Rex R. Vaughn, |
| The picture of the power adapter on the Amazon web page is of an Apple manufactured unit. What was shipped to me is a generic "power brick" style adapter, definitely NOT made by Apple. If you are expecting an Apple branded unit, do not order this one. Deceptive and misleading presentation by Amazon. |
THIS THING IS A FIRE HAZARD!!

I have two Powerbook G4s. Great machines!! Bought them both used in 2006. Three years later, they're both doing fine. And I'm a power user.
Over the same three years, I have had to purchase about 4 of these Apple Power Adaptors (part M8943LL/A).
Basically the same thing would happen--after 6-8 months, the part the connected to the laptop would get extremely hot (seriously, you could hot keep your hand on it for more than a second), the cable would fray and no power would be supplied. Before this happened, I'd have to twist and turn the connector and listen for a disturbing "spark" noise to before it would provide power.
2 of these things actually started smoking before they went dead. One of them burned a hole into my sofa. Luckily I was home to catch it or there would have been a major fire.
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. IT IS DANGEROUS.
There are SEVERAL third party solutions, many here on Amazon. Apple could have recaptured this money by being a stand up company and making a better replacement adaptor. But, as they've recently shown, they have stars in their eyes due to the success of iPod and iPhone and no longer care about supporting their legacy users.

Does the job

This product works fine and is probably worth the price. The drawbacks: 1) the cord is very short, much shorter than the Apple one it replaces; 2) It does not have the light-up feature that tells you when the computer is charging and when it is fully charged; 3) It takes the computer a minute to recognize it is charging, which is fine. But if your power goes all the way down and the computer goes into sleep mode and THEN you plug it in, it takes 5 minutes to recognize that there is charge enough to start out of sleep mode. I never had this problem with the original cord.

NOT AN APPLE CHARGER
|
| Review Date: December 9, 2009 |
| Reviewer: DLH, SLC, Utah |
I wanted a charger just like the one I purchased with my PowerBook G4. This isn't an Apple brand charger. I know that a few customers have uploaded pictures of what they received and THOSE ones actually look like Apple chargers. This is nothing close to what I got in the mail today. It's a generic charger. The cord from the brick to the tip is about three times as thick as the Apple one, so maybe it'll be more substantial, but I'm still a little uneasy about using anything generic.
Revision:
My husband just came home and looked at it. This charger puts out more amps than the Apple one, so that may explain some of the issues people have been having with replacement chargers (smoking, sparks, melting, etc.) I'll be returning this! |
KILLED MY POWERBOOK

| This thing was a piece of junk. After 2 weeks, it started making a popping noise when I plugged it in to the laptop. A day or two later, when I plugged it in for the last time, a nice little puff of smoke came from the charging module of the laptop. Now nothing will charge the battery. |
Don't Bother

| Reviewer: John Henry, |
Like another reviewer, the cord on mine frayed just below the tip that plugs into my iBook. At first I could twist it around which could reestablish a connection and continue to charge, but doing this caused visible and audible electrical sparks. Not safe. Now it has frayed more and doesn't give any power whatsoever.
With my original adapter, this process took a couple of years. With this cheap replacement, it was a matter of months (under 6).
Also, the cord is uselessly short. It's hardly long enough for me to even use it at a desk right next to an outlet. An extension cord is absolutely necessary. |
Almost lasted 3 months

Works, but quality isn't great

| I bought this to replace the original that came with my laptop. I got it and it worked great. I was a little disappointed that it didn't come with the extension cord like the original, but they didn't say it would so I can deal with that. It works fine, but the plastic that the wire is encased in (the cord) started splitting and coming apart within weeks! All from wrapping it around the pull out things--which is what it was MADE to do! I've had to tape it up with electrical tape. It works fine still, but it's ugly now because I had to tape it. It's not very safe to have exposed wires like that...booo |
